Celexa Description

Celexa is an antidepressant classed as a 'serotonin selective reuptake inhibitor' (SSRI). Celexa contains the active ingredient called citalopram, which works to block the clearance of serotonin in brain cells. Depression is associated with an imbalance of serotonin, and thus SSRIs may alleviate the symptoms of depression by regulating serotonin levels in the brain.
Citalopram is often used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic attacks, and generalized anxiety disorders. This medicine may also be prescribed by your doctor for other medical conditions, such as severe migraines or diabetic neuropathies.

Celexa Directions

Please take this medicine as directed by your doctor. Celexa or citalopram may come with an information leaflet - please read this carefully and clarify any queries with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Do not exceed your prescribed dosage and do not stop taking this medication, even if you start to feel better. You may take this medicine on an empty stomach or with food.
If you miss a dose, ignore this and only take your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.
Please store this medicine in a tightly closed container at room temperature away from heat, light or moisture.

Celexa Cautions

Do not take Celexa or citalopram if you've had an allergic reaction to it, or if you are allergic to any ingredients in this product.
Adhere to your prescribed dose and do not suddenly stop taking this medicine. It may take several weeks before you notice a change in your symptoms. If you feel that your condition is getting worse, please see your doctor immediately. This includes the following symptoms: anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, increased irritability, difficulty sleeping, hostility, impulsive feelings, severe restlessness, or worsening of your depressive mood. If you are a parent or caregiver, it is important for you to monitor the patient and be alert for these signs.
This medicine may lessen your ability to drive or operate machinery. Please refrain from these and other hazardous activities until you know how to react to this medicine.
Please avoid consuming alcohol whilst taking Celexa or citalopram. This medicine interacts with alcohol and other depressants to exaggerate their effects, e.g. dizziness and poor balance. Other depressant medicines include certain anti-anxiety medications, codeine, and beta blockers (e.g. metoprolol). Before using any new medicine, please ensure you report all of your prescribed and over-the-counter medications (including those containing dextromethorphan) to your pharmacist or doctor, as to ensure there are no drug interactions that may alter the effects.
Please take caution if this medicine is used in children or adolescents, as they may be more sensitive to the effects or side effects.
If you wish to become pregnant, please discuss the risks and benefits of this medicine with your doctor, especially during the third trimester. Celexa or citalopram is excreted in breast milk, so it is advised that you do not breast feed whilst taking this medicine.

Celexa Side Effects

There are some side effects that may occur, which will usually subside with treatment. These include: weight loss or gain, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, itching, rash, change in taste, tiredness, change in sexual function, or decreased menstrual flow. If these side effects continue or are distressing for you, please see your doctor.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, please see your doctor as soon as possible: sudden onset of a cold sweat, fatigue, confusion, sore throat or fever, shakiness, vision chances, dizziness or lack of concern.
Please seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following: severe nervousness or anxiety, agitation, severe restlessness, worsening feelings of depression, thoughts of hurting yourself, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, feelings of irritability or hostility, impulsive behavior or other unusual changes in behavior, or any other mental or mood changes.
Although it is unlikely, please seek immediate medical attention if you are allergic to this medicine Signs of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling of the face, trouble breathing, or severe dizziness.
